What people are saying:

* Why Do Black People will make you laugh, curse and shout, but above all it will make you think. (Earl Ofari Hutchinson, PhD., author of The Crisis in Black and Black)

Thoughtful, frank, and honest, August 29, 2006

Reviewer:Marron (Boston)
I met the author of this book while she was selling copies on Venice Beach in L.A., and I bought it because I was curious and because the author seemed so appealing. The title is kind of hokey, but the book discusses sensitive issues (e.g. black people's feelings about immigrants, their supposed "paranoia" about racial issues), as well as lighter ones (e.g. black men's love of large butts), with thoughtfulness, political astuteness (in my humble opinion), frankness, and clarity. A lot of the questions in the book are those many non-Blacks have wondered about but were afraid to ask, lest they be accused of racism. Besides that, the book is well written, and the author has a good sense of humor.

* Why Do Black People is funny and deceptively educational -- Dave Chappelle would approve. (D. Rizzo)

* Being relatively new to this country from Germany, yourblackfriend.com has been a great resource for me to learn and expand my knowledge. I’m glad she’s now on the web for every to use. Keep it up! (Maren S.)

*My favorite counterpart, AskaMexican.com, had this to say in response to what is probably a typical question about Mexican/African-American  tensions:
Dear Wab: Time and time again in this column, wabs like you show why tensions between Mexicans and African-Americans are waiting for a match. To bridge this perilous racial gap, I urge wabs to consult Nashieqa Washington's recently published Why Do Black People Love Fried Chicken? and Other Questions You've Wondered But Didn't Dare Ask? According to Washington, blacks don't like Mexicans because they feel Mexicans are slowly displacing them "socially, politically and economically . . . [w]ith shifting ethnic demographics" (i.e. more Latinos), I fully expect these tensions to extend beyond poor blacks into wider society. Washington is right—flare-ups between old and new communities in the United States are as American as jazz. But one thing Washington doesn't mention is how fiercely Mexicans dump on African-Americans, which gives them every right to want us deported. For chrissake, Niggarachi, you called African-Americans "niggers", "motherfuckers" and chanates (the Mexican Spanish word for blackbird—and yet another slur in our Rolodex of Racism used against blacks) in the course of your question—and you still have to ask why "they" hate us?

*In case you were wondering, Black People also endorse yourblackfriend:

"Why Do Black People Love Fried Chicken? And Other Questions You've Wondered but Didn't Dare Ask" is one that makes you laugh out loud, nod your head while reading and makes you think. ...can also be a tool for us, yes black people, to take a look inside and see just how we might be portraying ourselves. It never hurts to question ourselves and how those outside of our community tend to see us. After reading the book it made me think, "Is this really how I want my community be look at for years to come?".
